Leadership

Meet the people guiding BBAU's work to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity practice across Uganda.

Paul Okwalinga, President of the Biosafety and Biosecurity Association of Uganda

A Word from the President

Our collective responsibility is to ensure that systems are in place to detect, prevent and respond effectively to biological risks.
Paul Okwalinga, President, BBAU

Welcome to the Biosafety and Biosecurity Association of Uganda.

Uganda's health, scientific and development priorities increasingly depend on our ability to manage biological risks responsibly. Emerging and re-emerging diseases, advances in biotechnology, expanding laboratory systems and growing cyber-biosecurity concerns require strong institutions, competent professionals and sustained collaboration across sectors.

BBAU provides a home for this collective effort. We bring together professionals and institutions from human, animal, plant, wildlife and environmental health; academia and research; communities and the private sector; and the policy, regulatory and security systems responsible for national and international biological-risk obligations.

Through training, mentorship, competency development, certification support, advocacy and technical engagement, we strengthen both professional practice and institutional systems. We also raise awareness of emerging risks associated with artificial intelligence, biotechnology and the continuous advancement of the life sciences.

Our progress is driven by members and partners who generously contribute their resources, knowledge, time and leadership. I invite professionals, students, institutions and partners to join us in advancing safe, secure and responsible science for Uganda and beyond.

Together, we can strengthen national systems, develop the next generation of professionals and protect our communities from biological risks.

Paul Okwalinga
